«Prison museum» was opened in Irkutsk
A new museum, «the Prison Castle», was opened in Irkutsk on the territory of the oldest prison. Three prison cells recreate the place
where the political prisoners of 19020th were held, and where famous
Admiral Kolchak spent his last days before the execution. The museum
project represents the co-work of Irkutsk Regional Museum and the prison administration. To start the project the Regional Museum won a grant of 15.000 dollars. The main part of the museum represents Kolchak
prison cell, the exhibits narrate about the life and the death of the famous admiral. The exhibition is added with the wax figures of the admiral himself and his guard (they were made in Saint-Petersburg
especially for the museum). Apart from the prison cells the museum
holds an underground tunnel. In the February of 1920 this tunnel was the tunnel that connected Kolchak’s prison cell and the place of his execution. The tunnel was discovered again by chance last spring; it was a part of the foundation laid down in 1803. Since those days the prison was reconstructed several times meanwhile the foundation was not touched. That is why the museum workers were caught by the full
surprise when they found a tunnel under the prison museum cells. Today,
the very tunnel is the only way for the museum visitors to get inside
and see the Prison Castle.
